Personally, I always get annoyed with good, practical articles on how to do something, where no specific numbers are given about the items you need. This is how I want to throw light over the big mystery of how many boxes exactly  you really need when relocating

But don't get too excited, folks. The numbers may vary a little depending upon the specific situation, so always have a few extra boxes! And besides, as my grandmother often says, it's never enough of something until it's some left over.

Generally, the number of boxes depends on the number of people moving (naturally!) and guess what, the duration of time in which these people have lived in the old place. The longer the time, the most the things that peal up.

The personal interests and hobbies of that people, especially if someone collects something, are also a factor. You are a passionate reader? Or you have a large collection of vinyls? Or there are an attic and/or a cellar in addition to your residence (I can tell you from fact, that attics and cellars never stay empty. They tend to fill up almost by themselves. I wonder why? ...) As you may notice, this is how exceptions arise.  

Okay, here come the numbers. So, when moving after two years of living in your residence, you are needing the number of boxes and additional packing materials below. Note, that to that number may be added a few special designated boxes for paintings, for lamps, for files or for electronics like computers, TVs and others. Also take into account, that small moving boxes are about 35x27x33 centimeters,  medium-sized are 55x35x33 centimeters and large moving boxes are 46x46x45 centimeters.

- Packing materials for one person (a single-room residence):
12 moving boxes (7 small boxes, 3 medium-sized boxes, 2 large boxes)
4 books boxes
1 wardrobe box
1 glassware box or dish pack box
1 mattress plastic cover
    1 roll of bubble wrapping
    1 roll of wrapping tissue
    1 roll of adhesive tape

-Packing materials for two persons (or a two-room residence):
    20 moving boxes (10 small boxes, 5 medium-sized boxes, 5 large boxes)
    8 books boxes
    2 wardrobe boxes
    2 glassware boxes or dish pack boxes
    2 rolls of bubble wrapping
    2 mattress plastic covers
    2 rolls of wrapping tissue
    2 rolls of adhesive tape

-Packing materials for three persons (or a three-room residence):
    30 moving boxes (15 small boxes, 8 medium-sized boxes, 7 large boxes )
    10 books boxes
    3 wardrobe boxes
    3 glassware boxes or dish pack boxes
    2 rolls of bubble wrapping
3 mattress plastic covers
    2 rolls of wrapping tissue
    3 rolls of adhesive tape

-Packing materials for four persons (or a four-room residence):
    45 moving boxes (15 small boxes, 10 medium-sized boxes, 10 large boxes)
    15 books boxes
    4 wardrobe boxes
    4 glassware boxes or dish pack boxes
    2 rolls of bubble wrapping
    4 mattress plastic covers
    3 rolls of wrapping tissue

-Packing materials for five persons (or a five-room residence):
    50 moving boxes (20 small boxes, 15 medium-sized boxes, 15 large boxes)
    18 books boxes
    5 wardrobe boxes
    5 glassware boxes or dish pack boxes
    3 rolls of bubble wrapping
    5 mattress plastic covers
    3 rolls of wrapping tissue
    4 rolls of adhesive tape

-Packing materials for six persons (or a six-room residence):
    55 moving boxes (25 small boxes, 17 medium-sized boxes, 13 large boxes)
    21 books boxes
    6 wardrobe boxes
    6 glassware boxes or dish pack boxes
    3 rolls of bubble wrapping
    4 mattress plastic covers
    4 rolls of wrapping tissue
    5 rolls of adhesive tape

If you owe a collection of books, CDs, DVDs or vinyls, count them down, if you don't know the exact number by heart of course, and supply with  the corresponding number of specially designated boxes. A book box can accommodate 50 to 70 books, a CD box - about 145 CDs or DVDs, a vinyl box - about 100 vinyls.
