Health and Safety Policy for Removal Scotland

Removal Scotland is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public affected by our removal services. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with home and office moves, packing, loading, transportation and unloading of goods.

Our aim is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property by managing health and safety in a systematic, proactive and practical way across all removal operations.

Management Responsibilities and Commitment

Senior management at Removal Scotland accepts overall responsibility for health and safety performance. We will provide clear leadership, set objectives, allocate appropriate resources and review this policy regularly to ensure it remains effective and relevant to our removal activities.

Managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy within their areas of control. They must ensure that safe systems of work are in place, that employees are properly trained and supervised, and that health and safety considerations are integrated into planning for all removal jobs.

Employee Responsibilities

Every employee of Removal Scotland has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear any required personal protective equipment and report hazards, near misses or incidents without delay.

Employees are encouraged to participate in health and safety discussions and to contribute suggestions for improving safety on removal projects, whether they relate to manual handling, vehicle safety, packing methods or site access.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Removal Scotland undertakes suitable and proportionate risk assessments for its activities, including domestic and commercial removals, specialist item handling and storage operations. These assessments identify significant hazards, evaluate risks and define control measures to protect staff, customers and the public.

Safe systems of work are developed from these risk assessments and may include specific procedures for heavy lifting, stair work, use of ramps and trolleys, loading and securing goods in vehicles, working in confined spaces such as lofts, and safe operation in busy streets or shared premises.

Manual Handling and Musculoskeletal Health

Manual handling is a core aspect of removal work and presents a significant risk of injury if not managed appropriately. Removal Scotland is committed to reducing manual handling risks by planning jobs carefully, using mechanical aids wherever practical and ensuring that loads are kept within safe limits.

All staff involved in lifting and carrying are trained in safe manual handling techniques, including team lifts, use of proper posture, assessment of item weight and shape, and recognition of when a job requires additional assistance or equipment. We aim to prevent musculoskeletal disorders by promoting good practice and early reporting of discomfort.

Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety

Our removal vehicles are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition in line with manufacturer guidance and applicable transport safety requirements. Regular inspections are carried out and defects are reported and rectified promptly.

Only authorised and competent drivers are permitted to operate Removal Scotland vehicles. Drivers must adhere to road traffic rules, plan journeys safely, allow adequate time for travel and rest, and ensure that loads are evenly distributed and properly secured before departure.

Equipment, Tools and Personal Protective Equipment

Removal Scotland provides appropriate equipment and tools to carry out removal tasks safely, such as sack trucks, dollies, moving straps, ramps, blankets and securing devices. All equipment is inspected and maintained so that it remains in safe working order.

Where specific risks demand additional protection, suitable personal protective equipment is provided, which may include safety footwear, gloves, high-visibility garments or other items relevant to the task. Employees are required to use this equipment correctly and report any loss or defect.

Customer Premises and Public Safety

Removal work often takes place within customer homes, offices and shared buildings, as well as on public roads and access routes. We recognise our responsibility to protect customers, visitors and members of the public while we are on site.

Our teams plan access routes, keep walkways clear where possible, use warning signs or verbal communication when moving large items, and take care to minimise trip hazards from packaging materials, tools and equipment. We also take steps to protect property from accidental damage during packing, removal and delivery.

Training, Information and Supervision

Removal Scotland provides employees with appropriate health and safety training, both at induction and on an ongoing basis. Training covers topics such as manual handling, vehicle safety, use of equipment, site awareness and emergency procedures relevant to removal work.

Written information and verbal briefings are provided to ensure staff understand the risks associated with their tasks and the control measures in place. Supervision levels are set according to experience and the complexity of the removal job, with less experienced staff receiving closer guidance.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses that occur during removal activities must be reported as soon as possible. Removal Scotland maintains records of these events and investigates them to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Emergency arrangements, including response to injury, fire and other unexpected events, are explained to staff. Where we are working at customer premises, our teams cooperate with on-site emergency procedures and ensure that escape routes remain accessible wherever reasonably practicable.

Health, Welfare and Wellbeing

Removal Scotland recognises the importance of general health and wellbeing in maintaining a safe workplace. We seek to manage fatigue, stress and other factors that can affect performance and decision-making, particularly during busy periods or long removal days.

Reasonable welfare facilities are provided, and employees are encouraged to take adequate breaks, stay hydrated and raise any health concerns with management. We support an open culture in which safety concerns and suggestions are taken seriously and addressed promptly.

Continuous Improvement and Policy Review

This Health and Safety policy is reviewed regularly and updated as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry standards, operational practices and lessons learned from experience. Removal Scotland is committed to continuous improvement and to maintaining high standards of safety across all removal services.

By working together, following agreed procedures and maintaining awareness of potential hazards, we aim to deliver efficient and professional removals while protecting the health and safety of everyone involved.
